SF Vegan Drinks is tomorrow night! It’s your monthly chance to meet your fellow Bay Area vegans in the (cruelty-free) flesh. Check out that menu! Are fried beets any good? I mean, duh, what fried food isn’t good, but still! Beets!
SF Vegan Drinks happens from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, 2323 Mission (at 19th Street) in S.F. Check out Facebook for more info! Be there, or be sober and poorly fed!
And, of course, the original Vegan Drinks takes place tomorrow as well at Fontana’s Bar on the Lower East Side in New York. For more info (and there is a lot of info), visit the website.

Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use!  »

It’s Paul Shapiro’s weekly Animal News You Can Use! Yay!

First and foremost, don’t miss last night’s ABC World News feature on the new undercover investigation by Compassion Over Killing that led USDA to shut down a major California slaughter plant this week. Impressive.

Also, this week New Jersey’s largest paper officially endorsed the state’s bill to ban gestation crates for pigs, even citing in its endorsement the op-ed referenced in last week’s email. Boom.

Speaking of pigs, food service giant Aramark announced with HSUS that it will require its pork suppliers to end their use of gestation crates. Bring it.

Finally, five years in a row, VegNews readers have voted HSUS their favorite animal protection group. You can help make it six by voting for us in this year’s Veggie Awards! [Ed.: Vote for Vegansaurus for favorite blog and Ask Laura for favorite column, too, if you want xoxoxoxoxo!]

Vegan, gluten-free almond joy! Heaven in a bite-sized bit of coconutty almond deliciousness! Gleaned from VegNews’ Pinterest page, which is very, very delicious. Too delicious, some might say. Idiots, that’s who would say that.

via the wonderful folks at vegnews:

The Vegan Drinks menu for tomorrow’s San Francisco event already had us salivating. And what better way to wash down a basket of pickles or a platter of sliders than with vegan piña coladas?

WE DO!!! A bucket, an ENTIRE FUCKING BUCKET. Done and done! And done again!

SF vegan drinks is tonight! See you there!   »

Let’s do this, peeps. I’m feeling really confident this week, so maybe I’ll talk to strangers! I think it’s called networking? But I probably won’t; I like people to come to me so I can act awkward and blush a lot, all the while being a little bit overexcited. Winning mix, right? Let’s hang.

SF Vegan Drinks happens tonight, Thursday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, 2323 Mission St. at 19th.

Drink specials are strawberry basil caipirinhas, $3 bottled beer, $4 well drinks, and $5 vegan white Russians! Featured vegan food includes sweet potato tater tots, beer battered onion rings, veggie burgers, and vegan summer sliders. Try not to make the same mistake I did last time and eat all of it in one sitting. The only thing I was acquainted with that night was the toilet.

Confidential to VegLovr: I saw that comment in the last SF Vegan Drinks post, and I think you and I were made for each other, no joke.

S.F. Vegan Drinks is Tonight!   »

Hey you sexy San Francisco beasts! It’s time for Vegan Drinks! Silly me, I forgot to post last month, which also means I forgot to go. Easy solution — I’ll just make up for lost time this month! Problem solved; let’s do this!
I can’t wait to see all of your fancy rain gear. Maybe you can give me tips on how to dress for rainy weather? I own an umbrella and that is it—no rainboots or slicker—what is wrong with me? I’m just miserable and wet, all the time! Seeing your faces will cheer me right up, and also I need to forget that I am sad about missing Grey’s Anatomy (all the best shows are on Thursday nights!). No one said being a social butterfly was easy.

You know the drill by now, right?
When: Thursday, March 29, 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, 2323 Mission St. at 19th
Drinks: $3 bottled beer, $4 well drinks, and $5 vegan white Russians!

Let’s take a look at the menu! Food is so exciting!

Last time I went, I ate the sliders and half of a vegan sampler basket, which caused me to not feel like a sexy beast the rest of the night. So I’ll just delicately nibble off of all of your plates, I hope that is okay.

See you tonight!

Paul Shapiro presents: The Meatless Revolution, vegan men, and Wendy’s makes some changes!  »

It’s Paul Shapiro’s Animal News You Can Use! Yay!

Happy Meatless Monday! TIME’s great new feature, “The Meatless (and Less Meat) Revolution,” may make you even happier.

More good news: Wendy’s is joining McDonald’s in requiring pork suppliers to outline their plans to end the use of gestation crates. And on that topic, the Kansas City Star has a good story entitled “Humane Society says Seaboard dishonest about its treatment of hogs.”

Yes, even more good news: Major dairy industry trade publication Hoard’s Dairyman editorialized in favor of ending tail-docking of dairy cows.

And here’s a compelling piece in The Atlantic by a former HSUS undercover investigator about his views on ag-gag laws.

Finally, as both a man and a vegan, I’m apparently qualified to do a live twitter chat about vegan men, hosted by VegNews Magazine, this Wed at 9pm ET (I’m @pshapiro on twitter). Hope to see you there!

P.S. Photo of the week:

Yes, I met Angela from “The Office.” Turns out she really does have a cat (and she’s very nice). And for your video this week: No dancing goat, but rather a trailer for a provocative new film I’m glad to be interviewed in: Speciesism The Movie.

You can follow Paul on Twitter at @pshapiro.
