The 20 Best Vegan Dishes in the Mission District!? »
VegNews published this awesome list of their most favorite things to eat in the Mission. How do you feel about it? Agree? Disagree? Yeah, I’m pretty much hella agreeing, except my absolute favorite burrito is still El Farolito and ain’t no amount of Hep C or knife fights gonna change that.
[Little lighthouse, I love you, forever and ever. I don’t care if you stab me or shank me or that your bathroom is a gas chamber or that I’ve actually had to cross a crime scene to get to you (SEVERAL TIMES), you’re still #1!] [Yelp photo!]
The Vegansaurus holiday gingerbread collection! »
You guys, I love gingerbread. I love it more than chocolate, even. (Less than lemon or peanut butter, though I’m not a monster.) Partly because it reminds me of childhood baking with my ma, partly because it reminds me of the best technically religious holiday of the year, CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS HOORAY, and partly because it is delicious and people who don’t like it worry me, on principle.
Have you made gingerbread yet this season? I am eating a gingerbread tyrannosaurus while typing this post! It’s delicious! I’d show you a photo, but it’s tragically ugly and I’m ashamed. I used our friend/super-famous vegan genius Isa’s recipe that she wrote three years ago!
If you haven’t made your own gingerbread cookies, get on it. Or better yet, houses! I made gingerbread houses seven years ago with three adorable children, and it was so fun. Our Megan Rascal made vegan gingerbread houses with her family two years ago, remember how awesome they looked?
Last year we saw gingerbread Daleks from Johnson Cameraface! Super-geeky, super-awesome!
Last year we also saw these crazy raw, gluten-free gingerbread people from d.i. wine and dine!
Finally, VegNews just posted this recipe for gingerbread from Ben Adams of Sticky Fingers Bakery!
So many options for gingerbread! Which are you going to make? May I suggest ALL OF THEM? It’s gingerbread time, everyone! Merry happy!
Soy nog cheesecake from Meet the Shannons! I know how obsessed you guys are with vegan nog so I knew you would want to see this cheese cake! AND Meet the Shannons is having a little contest where you can win a VegNews gift bag, including a year’s subscription to VegNews—so you’ll be able to keep up with our Laura’s column! I think you just have to leave some comments or something. You’ll see the full details when you follow the link.
I’m not a big nog person, but soy nog cheesecake sounds damn good. Make me some.
This is the dessert from Early Thanksgiving at VegNews! It’s vanilla bean ice cream made by the delightful Jenn Chen (from a BitterSweet recipe! I’m pretty sure it’s this one! But I am not positive!) and OCD Sweets vanilla bean caramel sauce! We paired it with holiday pies from Side Saddle Kitchen (we love them because damn, they make some delicious raw treats) and ate until we literally held our stomachs and cried. LITERALLY CRIED. I have nothing else to say because I’m still so freaking full. SO FULL.
It’s your daily Thanksgiving preview! This was reader Paige’s sweet potato cake (recipe courtesy VegNews!), and I think it looks as gorgeous today as it did a year ago! Man! Where is my sweet potato cake, already?
VegNews has an article up with a million kinds of mashed potato recipes and I had to share because mashed potatoes are my favorite potatoes. If you know me AT ALL (I’m glaring at you while I say this), you know that I love love love love love mashed potatoes with a kind of reverence that I usually reserve only for my dog, and I might even love her less because I don’t eat her, thus making her part of me, the purest form of love. Ask any slow foodie.
Does that make sense? Maybe not, but it’s because they love and respect animals so much that they eat them! Anyway, that’s how I feel about mashed potatoes.
Speaking of potatoes, ask me sometime to tell you my favorite blonde joke. Seriously, it’s really good.

Finally, let’s drool over the Cinnaholic cinnamon bun below and dream up our most favorite topping combo would be. Oh! If you don’t want to tell me your favorite vegan cookbook, let me know your favorite cinnamon roll topping combo OMG SO FUN.
Party at VegNews for awesome new vegan cookbook! »
First, I LOVE ANIMATED GIFS. Second, we’re all totally going to this party, right? I mean, I am for sure. There’s a Cinnaholic cinnamon bun bar. A BAR of CINNAMON BUNS. Did I stutter!? I am gonna lay down and have them literally bury me in cinnamon buns and then eat my way out while you all watch in horror/admiration. I will be your new queen! Imagine the possibilities!
Oh yeah, the party is for Spork-Fed, the Spork Sister’s first book! I’ve heard that it’s ridiculously adorable and filled with tons of delicious recipes. Plus, everyone who meets those girls falls immediately in love and wants to be/marry them, so right away we have a lot in common. Except they have a book deal and a cinnamon bun bar. How have I failed so badly when I’ve had every advantage!? Damn my crippling laziness and intellectual handicaps.
Anyway, buy your tickets ($35 and includes a copy of the book!) so we can relax on VegNews’s gorgeous rooftop in the mission, drink hella champagne, eat all the food, and be the best together!
Hey, SF! Vegan Drinks is upon us! »
My favorite thing in the world is picking popcorn out of my teeth. Why? Because it gives me something to do AND it means I just ate a shit-ton of popcorn, which is one of many reasons to go to August’s SF Vegan Drinks tomorrow, Aug. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m at Martuni’s.
Why else would you go? Besides all-you-can-eat vegan popcorn, you can
get hammered meet other local vegans and network to your little heart’s content. This month’s special is something called the “VDSF,” a martini with this new SF edition of Absolut Vodka (no idea) and juice, for $5. VegNews will provide attendees with a list of nearby veg restaurants to help you soak up the booze later, and if you’re working on a veg project, you can yak into the microphone to anyone who will listen at 7:45 p.m. Plus if you’re like me—cough-UNEMPLOYED-cough—you don’t have an excuse NOT to go. I’m bummed they did away with the vegan hot dogs, but I hate everything there’s always next time.
Vaute Couture is coming to San Francisco* to show us their fantastic, adorable, sustainable new coats! Specifically, they’ll be at VegNews fancy and gorgeous new headquarters and there will be champagne, sparkling cider, and Fat Bottom Bakery cupcakes! So delightful!! You have to make an appointment for a 20 minute slot on either September 2nd or 3rd, so get on it before all the good times are taken and you’re left out in the cold with NO BEAUTIFUL WARM COAT TO KEEP YOU WARM. Don’t worry, when you’re appointment is done, you can eat more cupcakes and drink more champagne on VegNews beautiful sunny roof and toast your good fortune! We’re all so lucky and pretty! Yay us!
*They’re also going to Los Angeles and Portland on their west coast tour so if you live somewhere else (that’s L.A. or Portland), despair not!
