Veal calves: horrifically abused by-product of the milk industry  »

Mercy for Animals has released another undercover video, this time from a veal facility in Canada. These little babies are not just confined, they are sick and injured, and get no medical attention. Why would they? They are just “food,” right? And then on top of that, the workers in the factory pretty much torture them. I couldn’t watch the whole video, it’s too sad, but the parts I watched are disturbing.

I hear plenty of meat eaters proudly declare they don’t eat veal. Most people know it’s often a cruel industry. But do people know that veal is a by-product of dairy production? It’s very simple: Cows need to have babies in order to produce milk. Many of the babies born are male. These male calves are useless to the dairy industry. So they are shipped to veal farms.

Even “humane” dairy farms do this. That’s what I always tell people when they say such and such dairy farm is so nice to the cows: ask where the boy calves are. I dare you.

When I was a vegetarian, I had no idea that the cheese I consumed drove the veal industry. When I found out though, that’s when I became vegan. Of course I learned all the other reasons to be vegan eventually, but the link between dairy and veal is what made me vegan pretty much over night. I just thought to myself, if veal is a by-product of the dairy industry, dairy isn’t very vegetarian at all! Basically, being vegetarian isn’t very vegetarian.

You can learn more about this investigation and send an email from the Mercy For Animals page.

THIS PIGLET IS TOO CUTE! You can skip to :30, that’s the best part. It’s so adorable.

I can’t wait until I get a piglet! I’m going to love her or him sooooo much. But until we all get our own piglets, we can support the lil’ guys at Animal Place!

Stop eating eggs! For Little Miss Sunshine’s sake!  »

Meet Little Miss Sunshine from Animals Australia.

Animals Australia has a funny campaign, "That ain’t no way to treat a lady" about egg-laying hens. It’s a cute little play on gender roles. You can see the commercials on the link above but I like this sweet video about Little Miss Sunshine! Look at her looking in the mirror! So silly! I love her!

So what do you say, omnis and vegetarians? Maybe a living being is more important than breakfast?

Breaking: Humane Society finds cannibalism, cruelty, and disease at Kentucky pig factory  »

HSUS released a new undercover video today from the Iron Maiden pig factory in Kentucky. Besides awful gestation crates, they discovered that the factory takes piglets who die from “Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus” and feed them to mother pigs. It’s done in an effort to immunize the pigs. Freaking disgusting. Vegansaurus friend Paul Shapiro said of the factory, “The entire atmosphere at this facility is awful for animals, many of whom are perpetually immobilized and suffering from body sores, diarrhea attacks and prolapsed uteruses.” And it’s all for bacon? Our society is unbelievable.

I’m wondering, am I the only one who immediately feels claustrophobic when I see the pigs in the gestation crates? NYT article describes gestation crates pretty chillingly:

They live out their adult lives without exercise or meaningful social interaction; it’s like a life sentence of solitary confinement in a coffin, punctuated by artificial insemination and birth.

Awful. As the article title asks, “Is That Sausage Worth This?”

You can read more about the exposé on the Humane Society’s site, including a description of the video if you don’t want to watch. They also have a link to a petition but other than that, I’m not sure what we can do besides raise awareness and be vegan. If anyone knows about other ways to help, please share in the comments.

I’m feeling poorly today so let’s watch more cute videos to feel better! This was circling the net last week and it is HILAR. Slow to get started but omg why are dogs the smartest most silliest? And how does he not singe his whiskers?!

Lil Bub for the Humane Society of the US! Because HSUS and Bub want you to adopt a pal! As you should know, Lil Bub is a rescue and she couldn’t be more perfect. Who knows what other amazing creatures are out there looking for a home?! You could adopt the next ALF!

According to Mercy for Animals, this video was created by 13-year-old Kyle Kelleher. It’s pretty amazing. I suggest making a shortened version though. But jeez! How long did this take to make?! What were YOU doing when you were 13? NOTHING GOOD I BET.

More snow day fun with Mosley, the pajama-clad greyhound. I wasn’t sure if I’d be into to this video but then I watched it and OMG I’m so into it and why don’t I have batman pajamas? I need to get my shit together.

We all loved that video last week of the chickens in the snow, so I thought we’d like this one too! And the royal we totally did. The gist is these are some goofy-ass cows having a nice romp of freedom in the pasture! Totally made me smile (and it’s hard to melt this cold heart). They are so stoked! As Terra from Upspire says, this might make people think twice about eating meat. I won’t hold my breath but I will cross my fingers!

I don’t entirely understand what this foundation is but if you read German, you can check out their site. Google translate is telling me it’s translated and I’m like, Google translate, I’m a poor speller, but not that poor!

Compassion Over Killing exposes cruelty to turkeys at breeding facility  »

Can’t see the video? Watch it on Vegansaurus.com

Happy turkey day, am I right?!

From Compassion Over Killing:

Undercover Video Reveals Cruel and Filthy Conditions Inside a Minnesota Turkey Breeding Factory Farm

Starbuck, MN — Compassion Over Killing (COK), a national animal protection organization is releasing an undercover video filmed inside Hargin, Inc., a turkey breeding factory farm in Starbuck, Minnesota where an estimated 25,000 female turkeys are locked inside filthy, overcrowded sheds.

These hens will spend their lives being artificially inseminated over and over again — a frightening and violent process — to continually lay eggs that will hatch young turkeys to be raised and slaughtered for food, including Thanksgiving dinners. Some of the eggs from this facility will be sold to Minnesota-based Willmar Poultry, the nation’s largest turkey hatchery previously exposed for inhumane treatment of newly-hatched birds.

As our video shows, hens routinely become entangled in the dilapidated and poorly-maintained mechanical nests used to collect eggs. In an effort to free themselves, these birds often endure severe, bloody injuries on their wings, feet, or necks — some will suffer so severely, they’re unable to survive.

There are no federal laws in the United States protecting turkeys (or other birds raised for food) from such cruelty, and as is standard in the industry, sick and injured birds are typically left to suffer without any veterinary care.

Turkeys are smart, social and inquisitive birds with unique personalities. They’re devoted mothers who, given the opportunity, are inseparable from their babies. At breeding factories like Hargin, however, these hens will never get a chance to even see their young.

“Consumers are increasingly discovering the sad reality that animal cruelty is standard practice in the meat industry,” said COK’s executive director Erica Meier. “That’s why this Thanksgiving, a growing number of Americans are choosing to celebrate with a vegetarian meal that everyone, including the turkeys, can be thankful for.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, turkey production is projected to drop 5 percentcompared to 2012 — and that would bring it to its lowest point in 10 years.
