Sign the petition, volunteer, adopt, and donate to help the 50,000 chickens left to starve!  »

The fight to save the rescued hens from Stanislaus County continues. This is the largest ever farmed animal rescue in the United Sates. Conditions were terrible but people were able to help some of the birds!:

“When we arrived on the scene outside the abandoned egg farm, I was horrified at the suffering of the chickens happening in front of me, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the cruelty,” said Anne Martin, Harvest Home board member. “By the next morning, we had partnered with sanctuaries, volunteers from across Northern California, and thousands of supporters following the rescue of these chickens. Together, we were able to save 4,460 hens who will never again suffer the severe confinement of an egg farm, and from this time forward, will know only human kindness.”

The picture at the top is by Marji from Animal Place. This hen has never seen grass or felt the sun, she is about to take her first step outside! Marji says they are still in need of donations but also, they are in desperate need of volunteers. So if you are able, go volunteer with the rescue chickens!

If you want to volunteer, email marji@animalplace.org or call her at 530-798-5114. To donate, click here

The hens will be up for adoption within the next two weeks. If you want to adopt one, fill out the application at www.animalplace.org.

Finally—and I know you can all do this!—sign the petition started by Harvest Home, ”calling on the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office to prosecute A&L Poultry’s Andy Keung Cheung for willfully starving 50,000 chickens.” Do it!

Yo Washington state! Your turn to ban battery cages!  »

In more excellent news, the awesome Humane Society of the United States and the awesome Farm Sanctuary have introduced a ballot initiative in Washington state that will ban battery cages and the sale of battery eggs by 2018. Tell everyone you know in Washington State what’s up and that they need to get involved so we can get those torture-devices abolished pronto!

End goal: Adorable chickens will run free and I will be allowed to cuddle all of them. JOKE! But really, what a world that would be.

Caboodle Ranch: cutest cat village in the world!  »

Craig Grant is the totally awesome man who created Caboodle Ranch in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where over 600 cats reside. There was a time when he didn’t even like cats! But when his son went off to college, he left his cat with Craig. Craig soon learned the cat was preggers and ended up with five kittens. He wanted to give the kittens away but his son told him they had to stay with the mother for at least eight weeks; lo and behold, eight weeks later, Craig was in love.

And this is not a hoarding situation; all the cats have plenty of space, are well-fed, spayed or neutered and they have a doctor that comes out for regular vet visits. These cats are living the life! From the “about us” section:

Caboodle Ranch is now a permanent sanctuary for cats who have been kicked around by heartless people. There are many sad stories between all the cats I’ve taken in. Some almost starved to death, some of them wounded strays. I’ve seen many locked in cages for months in animal shelters and have taken in some of those too.
Cats should be able to roam free, and at Caboodle Ranch, that’s what they do. We are in the middle of 100 acres of wildlife. The cats follow me through the nature trails that I put in and maintain, they climb in tree forts that I’ve built and hide in underground dens I’ve dug for them.
These animals need our help. If you’d like to help with donations of any kind, please contact me using the contact information I’ve provided on this website.

How great is that?! The cats are way too adorable and the little houses are the bomb. And all the cats are totally in love with Craig. There’s a zillion pictures of the cats just chilling all over Craig. Of course I looked at every single picture but I’m trying to be conservative and not put them all up, so here are some cute ones (but there are plenty more on the site!).

Chilling at city hall:

Hanging out at the lake front condos with Craig:

Like it says above, they need donations. They also need volunteers! They get lots of visitors but they need the kind that come back. Any readers in Florida? It would be so fun! Am I the only one that totally wants to pick up and move to Caboodle Ranch? I call one of the condos! Make way for Megan!

Activists needed to help promote “The Cove”!  »

Just got word from the fine people at Earth Island Institute that they need volunteers to help promote The Cove, a new documemtary about the multibillion dollar capture-and-slaughter dolphin trade. Sad face(x)infinity. The Cove won the Audience Award in Documentary at Sundance. I saw a preview recently and it looks INTENSE. And by INTENSE, I mean that the preview totally made me cry and feel all outraged and lighted the activist fire within my soul. Totes gots to see this 4 real. The shit that humans do is beyond fucked up. Ugh, I am not a person that believes in violence but all I’m saying is that this makes me want to put some private parts in a vice grip. ANYWAY, check out the trailer, get information on upcoming screenings and yeah, do both those things.

Mary Jo Rice of E.I.I. has more details about volunteering at Bay Area Cove premieres. Word is that you get a really cool t-shirt if you do! FREE STUFF AND HELPING DOLPHIES? Please and thank you!

Please join us in getting the word out about The Cove and intensifying the campaign to end the Japan dolphin and whale slaughter…. In the Bay Area, premieres are scheduled for August 7 for the Shattuck Theater in Berkeley, Embarcadero Cinema Center in San Francisco, and for the San Rafael Film Center in Marin. Volunteers are needed opening weekend at all theaters to pass out postcards and gather email addresses, and at as many subsequent screenings as possible. Can you volunteer? Can you help us recruit individuals who will commit to a minimum of a 4-hour shift on behalf of Japan’s dolphins? We are also looking for a volunteer “Cove Captain” who will serve as principal coordinator for each theater. Any leads would be appreciated. If you can volunteer, please contact Mary Jo Rice.
